Mason Bates Interview

... can be found here.

Do take the time to hear him. I have alreay mentioned my impressions on his works, Mason Bates is probably the most significant american composer of his generation.

What is striking is how he explains why and how his work is the modern continuity of former creations. John Adams's autobiography makes a very similar point in his evolution.

This is a remarquable interview of a real personality of today. I wish now that we will soon be able to hear his works in Europe very soon.

Mason Bates in Chicago

I was glad to read from Andrew Partner's excellent Chicago based blog that Mason Bates is performed by the CSO and R Muti.

As per my previous post, this is a composer of talent and it is encouraging to read that he is being performed. We also need to hear his works in Europe but like new technology, things takes time to cross the oceans and reach the old world.

Have you heard Mason Bates ?

He is the LAPO's composer in residence. L Slatkin cancelled a concert (he is reported to have suffered a strike so we wish him prompt recovery) so both John Adams and Jayce Ogren shared duties to replace him for one of their East Coast - West Coast series.

Time for us to hear the broadcast in Europe and to discover that in the program,  Mason Bates's Liquid Interface is a stunning work. Like John Adams or Guillaume Connesson, his handling of orchestral colors and blend of contemporary - electronic scores is first-rate.

I need to spend more time relistening to the work to speak more about it but right now I have no doubt that this is a unique distinctive voice and hope to hear his works soon in the concert halls.
